We believe designing what you love can only improve the quality of the design and we love local #vawine and #vacraftbeer here at Watermark.
As the craft beer industry explodes, we have had fun playing a part in what some of these brands look like. This is especially a concern at shelf, when you are competing against shelf upon shelf of other loud illustrations and designs – each cool in their own right. We take the personality of the brand and design the packaging to stand out either through simplicity, color or boldness or other tricks of the trade (sometimes more than one) but try to remain true to who the brewery is. Design shouldn’t be loud for the sake of being loud. Sometimes simplicity/subtlety can stand out just as much because everything else is screaming.
Here is an interesting article from a design legend. While we do not necessarily agree with his thesis, it’s interesting all the same to hear from the designer for Brooklyn Brewery. We do not agree that just because it is craft beer and you don’t want to look like Budweiser, you have to purposefully look amateurish – some brands are more rustic or homegrown and so should reflect that, other brand personalities are clean and polished- and that’s ok too! In the end, the design should reflect the beer and the vision of that particular brewery, and everything else like the tasting room should follow suit to create an experience.
